Steel tape is also known as tape measure, box ruler, it is a line of the scale, by comparing with the measured size, and by the ruler direct reading of the universal length measuring tool. According to the different structure, the tape measure is divided into rolling cassette tape, automatic tape, brake tape and sounding steel tape.

Steel tape measure is one of the commonly used length measuring instruments in the geometric dimension inspection of pressure vessel manufacturing site.

The main structure of the steel tape measure is an elastic steel belt with lines on it and rolled into a ruler box or frame made of metal or plastic material.

The ruler end of the ordinary steel tape measure is equipped with a ruler hook or pull ring, and the ruler end of the sounding steel tape measure is equipped with a steel ruler weight. Its connection with the ruler tape can be hook-type or fixed. The frame and ruler weight have the same number. The ruler weight is divided into 0.7kg and 1.6kg according to its importance. The brake-type tape measure is attached with a button device that controls the rewinding of the tape.

The nominal length of the steel tape: take an integer multiple of 0.5 for the steel tape below 10m, and take an integer multiple of 5 for the steel tape above 10m. Steel tape is divided into two levels and two.

Requirements for use

When using steel tape, first check all parts of the tape: for self-winding and braking tape, it should be light, flexible and free of clamping when pulling out and rewinding the tape; The button device of the brake tape should be able to effectively control the tape rewinding without blocking failure. Box and rack rolling tape shall be flexible when rolling. The surface of the tape shall be free of rust, obvious spots and scratches, lines shall be clear.

The use of tape measures should be based on the "0" point end for measurement, so easy to read. When using non-zero point as the measurement reference, pay special attention to the number of the line at the beginning to avoid reading wrong.

The tape measure should be the same as the metal ruler. It should not be skewed back and forth, and the tape should be tightened.

The tape of the steel tape is generally plated with chrome, nickel or other coatings, so keep it clean and do not rub it against the surface to be measured to prevent scratches.

When using self-rolling or braking tape measure, the tape should not be pulled out too hard, but should be pulled out slowly, and it should be returned slowly after use. For brake-type tape measures, the brake button should be pressed first, and then the tape should be pulled out slowly. Press the brake button after use, and the tape will be wound automatically.

The tape can only be rolled, not folded. It is not allowed to place the tape measure in a humid place with acid gas to prevent corrosion.

In order to facilitate the use of night or no light, some steel tape ruler with the line surface coated with luminescent substances, in the dark there is light, so that people can see the lines and numbers, in use should pay attention to protect the coating.

In addition to measuring the length of the steel tape, it is also commonly used to measure the diameter of cylindrical workpieces (such as cylinders and heads). Before measuring, the steel tape with the corresponding measuring range should be selected according to the size of the measured diameter. When measuring the length of the outer circumference, a flat steel tape shall be selected.

The steel tape in use is not allowed to have defects that affect the performance, and the surface of the measured workpiece and the working surface of the tape should be wiped clean. The method of use is to put the tape around the circumference of the radial section of the workpiece to be measured, and the reading can be carried out after the two hands tighten the ruler and slide the ruler back and forth several times along the surface of the workpiece.

The method of reading the steel tape is the overlapping method. When the tape of the tape is folded around the measured workpiece, the tape is overlapped together, and the scribing value at the overlap between the two ends of the tape is viewed. This value is the measurement result, that is, the outer circumference of the measured cylindrical workpiece.
